Australia’s latest marine incident figures are a timely reminder that good boating is not only about enjoying time on the water; it is also about managing risk before something goes wrong.
The 2025 Marine Incident Annual Report, highlighted by Marine Business News, examined incidents involving domestic commercial vessels, foreign-flagged vessels and regulated Australian vessels operating in Australian waters.
While the report is centred on regulated and commercial activity rather than everyday private boating, its findings carry useful lessons for recreational owners, fishing operators, charter businesses and anyone reviewing their boat insurance.

Across the year, 4,174 marine incidents were reported. Domestic commercial vessels accounted for 1,229 of those reports, a rise of 4 per cent on 2024 and a much larger increase compared with 2021. Passenger vessels were especially prominent, representing 46 per cent of reported domestic commercial vessel incidents despite making up a far smaller share of the fleet. Larger vessels were also overrepresented, which is particularly relevant for tour operators, charter businesses and owners moving into bigger craft.

The human impact remains the most important part of the data. In 2025, domestic commercial vessel incidents resulted in four fatalities, 228 injuries and 92 person-overboard reports. Person-overboard incidents increased by 19 per cent compared with 2024. For insurers, regulators and operators, these are not abstract numbers; they point to the situations most likely to create serious claims, liability concerns and operational disruption.

The incident patterns also show where prevention can be most effective. Contact, collisions, groundings and power, propulsion and system failures remained common themes. Operational issues such as lookout, collision avoidance, berthing and vessel handling featured strongly, while technical failures were often linked to engines, gearing and steering. For owners, this reinforces the value of scheduled servicing, documented maintenance, crew briefings, current safety equipment and clear procedures before departure.

From an insurance perspective, the lesson is to align cover with real-world use. A boat used for occasional family trips has different exposures from a fishing charter, hire-and-drive vessel, marina-based operation or vessel travelling longer distances offshore. Owners should check whether their policy responds to their operating area, mooring location, passenger use, towing needs, personal effects, salvage, liability and machinery-related losses.

The report also highlights the benefit of professional advice. Specialist marine insurance brokers can help interpret policy wording, identify exclusions and make sure sums insured reflect the vessel, equipment, trailer and business interruption risks where relevant. In a market where incidents can quickly become expensive, the best insurance outcome often starts well before a claim is made.
