Mental health claim trends are a pay protection reminder

Why illness, stress and recovery time deserve a place in your household plan

Recent insurance industry reporting has again highlighted the role mental health can play in life and income protection claims.
For New Zealand workers, the message is practical rather than abstract: the risk of being unable to work is not limited to sudden accidents or visible injuries.
Stress-related illness, anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions can also interrupt earning capacity, sometimes for weeks or months.

That matters because many households build their budget around regular pay. Mortgage or rent, groceries, utilities, childcare, transport and debt repayments do not pause simply because recovery takes longer than expected. Sick leave may help in the short term, and ACC can be important where an injury is covered, but neither automatically solves every income gap created by illness or a gradual health condition.

This is where the detail of income protection insurance deserves closer attention. Policies can differ in how they define disability, how long the waiting period is before payments start, how long benefits may continue, and what evidence is needed at claim time. Mental health claims may also involve clinical reports, treatment plans and ongoing reviews, so understanding the process before you need it can reduce stress later.

For employees, the key question is whether employer sick leave, savings and any existing cover would be enough if work stopped for a health reason that was not quickly resolved. For self-employed people and contractors, the question can be even sharper. Irregular income, business overheads and the need to prove earnings can make cover design and claim documentation especially important.

Recent claim trends also underline why the cheapest policy is not always the best fit. A lower premium may come with a longer waiting period, a shorter benefit period, stricter definitions or exclusions that matter for your occupation and health history. Rehabilitation support, return-to-work assistance and clear claims communication can be just as important as the monthly benefit amount.

Before choosing or reviewing cover, it is worth mapping your essential expenses, emergency savings and likely recovery timeline. Then consider speaking with an adviser about how different policy settings could respond if illness affected your ability to earn. Mental health may be a sensitive topic, but financially, it should be treated like any other serious risk to household income.
