What the Life Insurance Code review means for policyholders

Clearer rules could help Australians judge cover before claim time

The continuing review of Australia's Life Insurance Code of Practice has become more than an industry governance exercise.
For policyholders, it is a timely reminder that the real value of life insurance depends on what happens at underwriting, at renewal, and especially when a claim is made.

The Code sets standards for how participating life insurers deal with customers across areas such as sales, policy changes, claims, complaints, medical information and vulnerable customer support. The latest phase of the review has kept attention on practical consumer issues, including clearer communication, fairer handling of complex health histories, better explanations of exclusions, and more consistent timeframes when families or injured workers are under financial pressure.

This is an extension of the earlier review of the Life Insurance Code of Practice, but the focus has now shifted from whether the review is needed to what stronger standards might actually look like. That distinction matters. A code that is easy for insurers to administer but difficult for consumers to understand will do little to rebuild confidence in life cover, income protection, trauma insurance or total and permanent disability cover.

One of the key issues for Australian households is predictability. Consumers are often comfortable comparing premiums, but less confident comparing definitions, waiting periods, exclusions and evidence requirements. A cheaper policy may still be appropriate, but only if the buyer understands the trade-offs. Stronger Code obligations around plain language and timely explanations could help reduce the gap between what customers think they have bought and what the policy actually provides.

Mental health remains a particularly sensitive area. Insurers need to price risk sustainably, yet broad or poorly explained restrictions can leave customers feeling excluded from protection altogether. A stronger Code could encourage more individualised assessment, clearer reasons for decisions and better pathways for review when applicants or claimants believe their circumstances have not been properly understood.

For families reviewing their own arrangements, the message is not to wait for reform before taking action. Policyholders may wish to consider reviewing beneficiaries, ownership structures, insurance inside superannuation, premium affordability and whether cover still matches debts, income and dependants. It may also help to estimate the level of cover needed before comparing policy features.

The Code review will not remove every difficult decision from life insurance. Claims can involve complex medical, legal and financial questions. But clearer standards can make the system easier to navigate and give consumers a better basis for judging whether their cover is suitable before their family has to rely on it.

Cyclone Cover Debate Highlights Strata Insurance Pressure Points

The latest industry attention on Australia's cyclone reinsurance arrangements is a timely reminder that premium relief for strata schemes is rarely driven by one policy lever alone. However, for owners corporations and body corporates, the practical impact can still vary sharply from building to building. - read more

Renewed attention on apartment building defects is a timely reminder that strata insurance is not assessed in isolation from the physical condition of a scheme. For owners corporations and body corporates, the issue is not only whether cover is in place, but whether the building can be clearly presented to insurers as a well-managed and understood risk. - read more
