What the Updated Broker Code Means for Insurance Clients

Clearer conduct expectations could help households and businesses ask better questions before choosing cover

What the Updated Broker Code Means for Insurance Clients?w=400

The information on this website is general in nature and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation, or needs. Consider seeking personal advice from a licensed adviser before acting on any information.

The National Insurance Brokers Association’s revised Insurance Brokers Code of Practice is moving the sector further towards clearer communication, stronger client care and more consistent professional standards.
For Australians who rely on insurance brokers to navigate complex cover, the development is more than an industry housekeeping exercise.
It goes directly to how clients understand advice, remuneration, service commitments and complaint pathways.

The code has been under review at a time when affordability, exclusions and claims experiences are front of mind for households and small businesses. While broker clients often value having an intermediary who can compare markets and explain policy wording, many still find it difficult to know exactly how a broker is paid, what services are included, and what happens if expectations are not met.

This update builds on an earlier consultation that placed fee and commission transparency in the spotlight. The practical issue is simple: clients need enough information to judge whether a recommendation is suitable, whether any conflicts have been managed, and whether the broker’s role continues after the policy is placed. That matters especially for business owners arranging multiple covers, where a low headline premium may not provide the breadth of protection needed after a major loss.

For consumers, the most useful response is not to treat the code as a guarantee that every broker will be the right fit. Instead, it should become a prompt for better conversations before signing an authority, renewing a policy or accepting a recommendation. Ask how the broker is remunerated, whether alternative insurers were considered, what key exclusions apply, and how claims support will work if something goes wrong.

Small businesses should also check whether their broker understands industry-specific exposures such as cyber interruption, public liability, contract works, professional indemnity or business interruption. The value of advice often sits in identifying gaps before a claim, not simply arranging the cheapest available cover.

The broader message is that trust in insurance depends on clarity. A stronger code can help set expectations, but clients still need to read documents carefully, compare options and keep records of advice. If implemented well, the revised standards should make it easier for Australians to distinguish between transactional policy placement and genuinely client-focused broker service.
