ASIC Service Review Keeps Income Protection Basics in Focus

The regulator’s 2026-27 life insurance priorities point to policy records, premium accuracy and benefit payments

ASIC’s 2026-27 life insurance priorities have put a practical issue back in front of income protection customers: the basic administration behind a policy can matter just as much as the headline level of cover.
In its latest sector letter to life insurer boards and executives, the regulator says it is continuing a review into service issues in life insurance, with a report expected in the third quarter of 2026-27.

For Australians who rely on income protection insurance, this is not an abstract compliance matter. Income protection is designed to support part of a person’s earnings when illness or injury prevents work, so errors in policy records, premium calculations or benefit payments can have a direct cash-flow impact at a vulnerable time. ASIC specifically pointed to the need for insurers to retain policy documents, calculate premiums correctly and pay the right benefits.

The regulator’s comments also connect with broader concerns already visible in complaints and breach reporting. While not every administrative problem leads to a declined or delayed claim, small process failures can become significant when a claimant is managing medical evidence, reduced income and household expenses. For income protection policyholders, the lesson is to keep their own records as well as relying on the insurer’s systems.

Useful documents to retain may include:

  • the original policy schedule and any later variation notices;
  • premium increase notices and renewal communications;
  • records showing occupation, income and benefit amount at the time cover was arranged or changed;
  • claim forms, medical certificates and insurer correspondence; and
  • notes of phone calls, including dates, names and the issues discussed.

ASIC’s priority letter is aimed at insurers, not consumers, and it does not mean every life insurer has the same service problems. It also does not replace the need to read the product disclosure statement, understand exclusions and check how a policy defines disability. However, the regulator’s focus is a timely reminder that good outcomes depend on both product design and execution.

For workers reviewing income protection cover, the practical questions remain familiar: what income is counted, how long the waiting period lasts, how the benefit period works, what offsets may apply, and how changes in work or health could affect a future claim. Those issues sit alongside the administrative basics now under regulatory scrutiny. Clear policy wording, accurate records and prompt communication are not just paperwork details; they can influence how smoothly support is delivered when earning capacity is interrupted.
