The latest data points to billions of dollars being paid to Australians across life insurance, total and permanent disability, trauma and income protection claims. While the figures cover a broad mix of retail policies, superannuation-based arrangements and workplace-related cover, the message for business leaders is direct. When cover is well designed, clearly explained and supported by an efficient claims process, it can materially reduce financial stress for employees, families and, in some cases, the business itself.

The data also highlights the importance of balancing affordability with sustainability. Insurers continue to manage pressure from disability and income protection claims, while employers are trying to offer benefits that are meaningful without placing unnecessary strain on budgets. That makes policy structure, eligibility rules and benefit design more important than ever.

A useful review should not stop at headline premiums. It should consider claim definitions, exclusions, continuation options, underwriting requirements, tax treatment and whether business-owned cover is aligned with shareholder agreements or succession plans.
