Latest SME Insurance Insights Put Policy Reviews Back on the Agenda

Cost pressure is real, but reducing cover without checking the risks can leave domestic service businesses exposed

The latest small business insurance market commentary has again highlighted a familiar tension for Australian operators: premiums and business costs are under pressure, but the risks facing small enterprises are not standing still.
For home service providers, that makes insurance review work more than an annual administration task.

Survey-based SME insurance insights released across the industry point to a continuing gap between what business owners believe they are covered for and what their policies may actually respond to. That matters for cleaners, gardeners, carers, maintenance contractors, mobile beauty providers and other domestic service businesses because their work often happens inside clients’ homes, around valuable property, pets, children, vehicles and personal belongings.

When cash flow tightens, it can be tempting to lower limits, remove optional sections or renew on the same basis as last year without much discussion. The problem is that a home services business can change quickly. A sole trader may add staff, take on higher-value clients, buy new tools, store more equipment at home, use a second vehicle, accept online payments or expand into services that carry different liability exposures.

The practical lesson is not that every business needs more insurance. It is that cover should match the way the business actually operates today. Public liability remains central for many domestic service providers, but it is rarely the whole picture. Depending on the work performed, operators may also need to consider professional indemnity, tools and equipment, business interruption, cyber cover, personal accident or income protection, motor insurance and cover for stock or materials kept at home.

There is also a documentation issue. If a claim occurs, insurers often need evidence of ownership, replacement value, maintenance, contracts, incident reports and the exact nature of the work being performed. Businesses that keep records up to date are generally better placed than those trying to reconstruct details after a loss.

For operators reviewing home services business insurance, useful steps include:

  • checking whether all services, locations, staff and subcontractor arrangements are accurately disclosed;
  • reviewing policy exclusions that could affect work in clients’ homes;
  • updating asset lists so the business can estimate appropriate sums insured for tools, portable equipment and business interruption;
  • asking whether contract requirements specify minimum liability limits;
  • considering working with a broker where risks, contracts or claims history are becoming more complex.

The broader SME message is clear: affordability matters, but so does resilience. A cheaper renewal can be costly if it leaves a domestic service operator exposed at the exact moment a client injury, property damage claim, theft or business interruption event occurs.

Recent transport and insurance industry attention on lithium-ion battery safety is a timely warning for Australian truck operators. Australia’s latest seasonal bushfire outlook is a practical reminder that fire risk is not confined to the height of summer. For many farms, the exposure begins well before a catastrophic fire day is declared, as grass growth, drying winds, stored fodder, machinery movement and access limitations combine to create a more complex risk profile than a standard rural home policy can address. - read more
